Donald S Murray – writer & poet

Poet and writer James Robertson has reviewed Donald S Murray’s latest, Red Star Over Hebrides, in the Scottish Review.

The review, characterised by Donald as “wonderful and thoughtful, says the book is a collection of songs and stories which explore the “clash or coming-together, of culture, politics, languages and individuals.”

Robertson’s review continues: “Some of the stories are Gogol-like in their surreal strangeness, and shot through with dark humour.

“One is narrated by a shoe which has been mouldering in a peat bog for years.

“In Sputnik, a young boy is obsessed by the story of Laika, the dog the Russians sent into space, and when the family collie has pups, he tries to teach one of them how to be an astronaut. It ends badly for the pup, but not in the way you might expect.”

And he tips his hat, too, at Red Star Over Hebrides publisher, Taproot Press.

“You sense that there is mutual respect between author and publisher. The result is a book unlike any other you are likely to read this year,” Robertson concludes.
