Donald S Murray – writer & poet

Author Donald S Murray will give a sneak preview in Stornoway about his latest novel, which is due out next January.

Donald will speak about his new novel ‘The Salt and the Flame’ at the Metagama Tattoo and Grand Concert, which are taking place in Stornoway on Friday and Saturday, August 11 and 12.

‘The Salt and the Flame’ is set in the 1920s when the Outer Hebrides underwent a demographic upheaval hard on the heels of the devastating losses of World War One.

He will be joined by musicians Willie Campbell and Liza Mulholland, two of his collaborators, in the critically acclaimed touring concert, ‘In the Wake of Metagama’, and Gaelic singer, Alyth McCormack.

Inspiration for ‘In the Wake of Metagama’ came when Liza and Donald were pounding the streets of Toronto, Detroit and Chicago in the footsteps of the 1920s emigrants late last year.

Donald and Liza were on fact-finding missions; Donald to uncover the stories of those who had ventured across the Atlantic, and Liza to reconnect with her Canadian family and retrace her grandparents’ footsteps.

The SS Metagama and the SS Marloch between them transported hundreds of mostly young single islanders to new lives in Canada and the US.

A century on and the migration has been marked by a series of major events.
